Overview
The Roads Policing Unit of West Midlands Police has enhanced efficiency and accountability with the installation of an iLockerz intelligent locker system at the CMPG (Central Motorway Police Group) building on the M6.
Before adopting iLockerz, the team relied on manual sign-out methods to manage shared assets — a process that often caused delays, limited visibility and reduced accountability. With 24-hour operations and the need for immediate readiness, the force required a smarter, more secure way to store and track essential equipment.
Solution
To overcome these challenges, West Midlands Police selected the iLockerz PRO range — chosen for its exceptional security, durability and proven performance across policing environments.
The team opted for a mix of large and large-wide compartments – exclusive to the PRO model – to house full kit bags containing all equipment required for a job, as well as large stand-alone devices. A 15-inch touchscreen was installed to enable advanced Multi- Asset and Comments features, supporting smarter management and communication from a large interface.

Challenges
Manual paper based tracking made it difficult to monitor which items were available, in use, or had sufficient charge – meaning that officers occasionally began shifts without the correct or fully charged kit. These paper-based sign-out sheets also relied on individuals to remember to update them and to record item movements correctly, meaning that accountability gaps frequently occurred. Supervisors had limited oversight of who was using each item and so if something went missing or failed to charge properly, tracing the cause was slow and unreliable. The force therefore needed a secure, automated system that could guarantee availability of mission critical equipment, eliminate human error, and provide full traceability for every item issued or returned.
